What is Jiu Jitsu?
Jiu Jitsu is a complete system of self defense which emphasises on the most efficient ways to dispatch an adversary. It employs techniques of holds and locks, blows and kicks and also the art of falling and throwing with the greatest impact. There are innumerable maneuvers which can temporarily or permanently paralyse nerves and nerve-centers and others that stop the circulation of blood to parts of the body. A large proportion of these involve the twisting of hands, arms, legs, ankles and the neck.
Jiu Jitsu is a devastatingly effective self-defense system. While the actual number of techniques may be relatively small (50), the variations and flexibility within the system is limited only by the practitioners ability to understand and apply the techniques. Jiu Jitsu is now undergoing somewhat of a rebirth, as people re-discover the numerous benefits, both practical and personal, of this dynamic and effective Combat Art.
To study traditional Jiu Jutsu it is necessary to understand that the samurai was the foundation of law and order in feudal
Japan. The high level of martial arts expertise gained by the samurai was used to protect the population and master he served, and to suppress violence. Jiu Jutsu was very often used not only as a means of self defense, but as a means of protecting others. Martial arts, then, when used in their original form, are used as a means to suppress violence and to restore equilibrium.
Jiu-Jutsu is both art and science. It involves knowledge of balance, bio-mechanics, leverage, momentum and physiology to place a victim at an advantage when confronted by an aggressor. Overcoming an opponent is achieved by using striking to vital points, joint locking, throwing, avoiding or immobilising the attacker. Some moves are simple, and some are complex, but with time anybody can achieve a high degree of skill. Throwing techniques are learned slowly and progressively, only after correctly learning how to fall safely. Top
Why join Jiu Jitsu
Unlike most martial arts Jiu-Jitsu is roughly 95% defensive meaning the person you are up against attacks first. This means that you are defending yourself which by law you are allowed to do. Jiu-Jitsu teaches you how to defend yourself against an attacker or attackers using the minimum amount of force as laid down by modern law.
Generally martial arts are considered suitable for fit, strong and healthy people. The fact is that while these categories often enjoy hard, physical training, they are not always the ones who stand to gain most. Jiu Jutsu is highly suitable for most able-bodied people and has even been taught to those in wheelchairs.
Girls, women, elderly folk, frail people as well as fit and strong people will all benefit from Jiu Jutsu training.
Jiu-Jitsu is a good form of exercise as well as teaching discipline and self-defense, it teaches students how to gain respect for them selves as well as how to respect other people. Students especially children find that they grow in self-confidence as well as improve their concentration and behavior.
Although less intensive training is permissible, concentration, perseverance, dedication and positive attitude are still expected and required. That is, each student is expected to do the best they can, given their individual circumstances.
